Free Essays on Guns, Germs, And Steel
Introduction ââ¬Å"Guns, Germs, and Steelâ⬠is a fascinating and enlightening book to read. I enjoyed reading this book, but donââ¬â¢t become confused that I agree with everything that is written in this book. The author, Jared Diamond wrote this book in response to a questioned presented to him by a politician named Yali in New Guinea. The question was, ââ¬Å"Why is it that you white people develop so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?â⬠Diamond attempts to answer this question in this book. In this book he comes to the conclusion that the rise of agricultural, centralized governments, geography, and animal domestication all played a part in the reason why some countries came to be more powerful than others. He has to trace human roots all the way back to when they first evolved. He runs into problems because some of the weakest countries were one of the first to evolved, but why? Simple Answer Jared Diamond summarizes his book, and answer to Yaliââ¬â¢s question into one simple sentence; ââ¬Å"History followed different courses for different peoples because differences among peopleââ¬â¢s environmentââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Pg 25). Of course, this answer is just scratching the surface when the complexity of the question is truly comprehended. However, lets focus on the simple answer for the time being. Diamond is saying that the disparity between the wealth of some countries versus the wealth, or lack of, is essentially caused by the differences among the countries environment. Environments constitute a wide range of things; Climate, animals, crops, social environment, among other things. This simple answer doesnââ¬â¢t answer Yaliââ¬â¢s question because the question is a complex one. I attempt to interpret his findings to the best of my knowledge. Jews Without Money essays
Jews Without Money essays Personal struggles, we all have them. Some have them more than others. In the partly autobiographical novel Jews Without Money, By Michael Gold, He depicts how the Jews struggled to make ends meet. His life was not easy growing up. Gold and his brothers were forced by poverty to get low-paying, unskilled jobs. They were forced to drop out of high school to support the family. Their father was a small businessman. His big dream was to own a business, but he didnt know how to run it. He ended up injuring himself at work and therefore in turn, confined to his bed Life was hard for Mike living in the ghetto of the Lower East Side of New York City. For centuries The Jews has lived in this universal ghetto. Yiddish literature is saturated with the ghetto melancholy and poverty. Jews Without Money is much compared with works such as All Souls by Michael Patrick Macdonald. Michael Gold was a communist all his life. Gold helped found "The New Masses," a literary periodical intended to "revive the spirit of the old Bohemian-left-liberal alliance." Gold was a journalist for the Communist press from 1933 off and on for the next thirty-three years. He developed radical political views and began contributing to socialist journals such as the Masses and the Call. Gold was strong opponent of the United States becoming involved in the First World War. When the USA entered the war in 1917 Gold moved to Mexico to evade the draft. All Souls, by Michael Patrick Macdonald was also a book about struggle. South Boston was also a ghetto and Michael and his family try to survive in a harsh world. His Sisters and Michael saw first hand, all the cruelty that went down in a place called The best place in the world. This book is related to Jews Without Money because they both came from poor backgrounds. McDonald and his family struggled to make ends meet. Go ...

MLA Referencing â⬠Citing a YouTube Video
MLA Referencing ââ¬â Citing a YouTube Video MLA Referencing ââ¬â Citing a YouTube Video As Bob Dylan once sang, the times they are a-changinââ¬â¢. And while Bob was referring to the political climate in the 1960s, the statement applies equally to referencing sources in a college paper. These days, for example, you can cite YouTube videos in your work alongside books and journal articles. Were sure Bob would have sang about it if YouTube had been a thing in the 60s, though. But how do you do this exactly? In this post, weââ¬â¢ll look at how to cite YouTube and other online videos using the MLA referencing system, including both in-text citations and the list entry. In-Text Citations for a YouTube Video In MLA referencing, you cite print sources by giving the authorââ¬â¢s surname and a page number. This isnââ¬â¢t possible when citing a video, though, as there are no page numbers to cite! What you do have is a time code or timestamp. This is the point in the video you want to cite, usually given in hours, minutes, and seconds. For example, we could cite a YouTube video like this: Defamiliarization is a key aspect of literature (Rugnetta 00:07:40). In this case, weââ¬â¢re citing a moment 7 minutes and 40 seconds into a video by Mike Rugnetta. Sometimes, though, it might not be easy to tell who to cite as the creator. In this case, for instance, weââ¬â¢ve used the presenter of the video, but in others you may want to cite a director or producer. The important thing is to use the same name in citations as you do in the list. The basic format for a YouTube video in an MLA list is: Author Surname, First Name. ââ¬Å"Title of Video.â⬠Platform/Website, uploaded by Username/Organization, date of upload, URL. In practice, then, the video we cited above would be referenced like this: Rugnetta, Mike. ââ¬Å"BUT WAIT: Is Bob Dylanââ¬â¢s Work Really Literature?â⬠YouTube, uploaded by PBS Idea Channel, November 2 2016, www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF7m44ORlRM. As shown above, you do not need to include the ââ¬Å"http://â⬠bit of the URL here. Missing Source Information You may sometimes find it difficult to find information for an online video source. If this occurs, simply include as much detail as possible so that the reader can identify the video based on your list. If you cannot find a name of the author of a video, for example, you can use the uploaderââ¬â¢s name instead. As long as you also provide a valid URL in the full reference, this should be enough for the reader to find the video cited.

EXTENDING NUMERACY Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
EXTENDING NUMERACY - Essay Example It is believed that mathematical thinking is the process of logical thought, as highlighted by DFES (1999) is a process of ââ¬ËLogical reasoning, problem solving and the ability to think in abstract ways (DFES, 1999, p.60-61).ââ¬â¢ Development of this method of thought can be aided through the art of speaking and listening, alongside group and collaborative work. Children using and applying their skills equates into mathematical thinking, as agreed by the National Curriculum (1999) which states that ââ¬Ëmathematics trains children with a ââ¬Ëuniquely powerful set of toolsââ¬â¢ to understand and develop the world (Directgov, 2010).ââ¬â¢ The National Numeracy Strategy, introduced by the Department of Education and employment, lays down a framework for the curriculum to be followed in all schools while teaching mathematics for children attending Reception to Year 6 (National Numeracy Strategy, 1999). Compiled in 1999, The National Numeracy Strategy set out four main ap proaches to the teaching of mathematics, viz.: Dedicated mathematics lessons every day Direct teaching and interactive oral work with the whole class and groups An emphasis on mental calculation Controlled differentiation, with all pupils engaged in mathematics relating to a common theme (National Numeracy Strategy, 1999). The National Numeracy Strategy has outlined guidelines for numeracy to be taught nationwide which has to be utilised by teachers within the classroom (National Numeracy Strategy, 1999). ... In order to calculate either cognitively or use written algorithms, it is necessary to have basic numeracy skills. These include: remembering and recalling number facts, relationships of numbers, and problem solving using mental visualization and/or previously learned strategies. Mental mathematics is the foundation to all mathematical methodologies. The ability to count or at least know place value is all cognitive during which memory is used to recall numerical facts or obtain new ones, therefore this skill should be nurtured and emphasised. There are several educationalists who are proponents of encouraging children to engage in more mental calculations rather than just solving problems on paper. In this regard, Askew (1998) states that, ââ¬ËUltimately, mathematics is a mental activity. While practical mathematics can help children develop mental images, written work on its own is not sufficient (Askew, 1998)ââ¬â¢. This statement agrees with the principle laid down in the Na tional Numeracy Strategy, which states that ââ¬Å"an ability to calculate mentally lies at the heart of numeracy (National Numeracy Strategy, 1999)ââ¬â¢ It is of truth, and it is of little use if a child can complete a page of sums, but does not know how to tackle a problem that has not been written down. The National Numeracy Strategy emphasizes that pupils need to be given opportunities to develop flexible methods of working with numbers mentally that enables them to use known information to derive facts that they cannot recall (National Numeracy Strategy, 1999). à Differentiation within education largely relates to the differences between comparable things, for example, building a picture for the children that

Operations Management of Z Mart Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Operations Management of Z Mart - Essay Example Due to financial constraints, hiring extra staff to man counters is not possible. This case study will try to highlight potential areas of improvement in the management and organization of Z Mart to avoid late handling and bad customer experiences. à It is easier to visualize the problem if one considers the layout of the shop. The main entrance and exit have counters that bill customers for all their merchandise before they exit the shop. The billing section for electronic goods is at a distance from where the (Customer Service Managers) CSMs are stationed which partly accounts for the delay in handling customers payments. à On the basis of the managerââ¬â¢s notes, the current situation can be described as a busy discount store with a steady flow of customers and with 14 counters from where billing can be done. The electronics department is removed from the billing counters at the main entrance and has a couple of counters to bill goods bought at the electronics section. There are two customer service managers per shift. Any checks above $100 need to be cleared by them. This causes a problem as the process of checking out the customers is slow and there is an unnecessary glut of impatient customers queuing at the electronics counters. à The situation analysis needs to consider the current scenario and how the store manager and his team of sales representatives can add value to the Z Mart business and how the manager can make a good impression during his review. In this case study, the manager needs to first identify his areas of concern and plan strategically so that he can enhance efficiency without incurring additional overheads expenditure.

Answer on following questions - Essay Example One of the notable court rulings was Griggs vs Duke Power Company (1971) which addressed work place discrimination Throughout the Caribbean colonies, African labor emerged as the labor of choice because European plantation owners considered African laborers to be more efficient, valuable and cheaper than the native indentured servants that they previously used (Baââ¬â¢ Nikongo, 152).
